Caste outfit leader, kin held on vandalism charge

The leader of the Tamil Nadu Mutharaiyar Sangam R. Viswanathan, his two sons and two sons-in-law were arrested on Thursday on a complaint by the leader of the Veera Mutharaiyar Peravai, Selvakumar, alleging they had ransacked his residence at Periya Kothamangalam and threatened to eliminate him owing to previous enmity.
They were reportedly taken for questioning early in the day and detained in an Armed Reserve community hall at K.K. Nagar here for a few hours.
The city police deployed a large number of personnel at the spot to prevent their supporters from assembling.
Mr. Viswanathan, his sons, Ramprabu and Balamurugan, and sons-in-law Ravishankar and Dharmaraj, were charged under IPC Sections 147 (unlawful assembly), 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 307 (attempt to murder), 427 (causing damage to the amount of Rs. 50 or upwards), and 506 (ii) under Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act.
They were subsequently brought to the district court under tight security and produced before Judicial Magistrate II Rajendran who remanded them in judicial custody.
In May, a group of Tamil Nadu Mutharaiyar Sangam members were arrested for indulging in vandalism at the Gandhi Market and in Fort Station limits while taking out an unauthorised procession — the outfit was permitted only to garland a statue of Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar in connection with ‘Sandhaya Vizha’.
They were arrested for destroying windowpanes of four buses, attacking passers-by, and attacking a police inspector.
Mr. Viswanathan, who is also an accused in the case, had secured bail.
